Ben-addiction

Tastebud Café

382 Ngati Muru Highway, RD1, Thames

We admit it, the husband and I are ‘Eggs Bene’ fans. If it’s on the menu, chances are that we’ll order some form of Eggs Benedict for breakfast/brunch. So over the years, we’ve eaten our way through a wide range of examples, often disappointing with soggy bread, tasteless spinach or overcooked eggs. I’m pleased to announce that we recently discovered the best Eggs Benedict ever!

Muffins, hash-browns, mushrooms, spinach, perfectly poached eggs and the tastiest hollandaise sauce. Tastebud Café calls it Vegetarian Eggs Benedict, but I call it the best breakfast I’ve had in yonks! The addition of hash-browns was an interesting and tasty touch, plus I loved the mushroom inclusion to the traditional spinach mix. The sauce wasn’t too salty or sweet, just a perfect complement to the dish. Totally scrumptious and definitely worth the hunger pains I’d had from the top of the Bombays. I’m glad we didn’t stop for breakfast earlier, or we’d never have discovered this taste sensation.

Although he had to steal a few of my mushrooms to see what my groans of pleasure were all about, the husband thoroughly enjoyed his Salmon Eggs Benedict. We washed our breakfasts down with fantastic coffee, while reading the weekend paper. If it wasn’t for the rain, it’d have been a perfect way to spend a Saturday morning.

Tastebud Café is run by very friendly staff and the toilets were squeaky clean (a plus for any convenience stop). My only gripe is that dogs aren’t allowed in their spacious outdoor seating area, so our pooch wasn’t very pleased at being relegated to the car.

Vegetarian Eggs Benedict is priced @ $15, with the Salmon or Bacon versions @ $15.50.

Tastebud Café is located on the right hand side of the straight as you enter Thames (opposite the sports fields) and is part of a garden centre.

In a nutshell: Order the Eggs Benedict – any version will do!

When I saw the title, I thought you’d discovered Benediction on St Benedict St in AKL city! It’s bloody marvellous, I recommend you give it a try one of these days when an egg craving overcomes you. Being called “Benediction” their eggs bene has to be of a high standard, they also have fab scones and the coffee divine.

More good news, you can visit Tastebud as often as you like when you come to see me while I’m living in Thames for 2 months later this year. How excited are you?! :o)
