State Highway 2, Maramarua
I don’t know how many hundreds of times we’ve driven past this terracotta coloured café at Maramarua. We always seem to be in a rush to get somewhere, and never feel the need to stop. Recently, returning home after a weekend away, we felt the urge for sustenance, and decided to drop in.
I’m glad we did, as I’ve just discovered my new ‘take a break’ stop off for any upcoming drives south.
The interior of the cafe is quite industrial with concrete floors, but it’s the little details, like the pukekos embedded into the concrete, and a treat box for dogs, that make it very cosy.
On this quiet Sunday afternoon, we were only after something little to nibble on. The cabinet housed a range of food – indulgent slices, quality looking pies, cakes and quiches, with ORB coffee served. They also offered a full breakfast menu, which I’ve kept locked in the back of my mind for our next early morning SH2 venture.
I settled on the raspberry and cointreau tart to keep the hunger at bay. It was served warmed with a dash of whipped cream – oh la la. What a magnificent combination.
The husband chose a slab of chocolate mud cake that was just as divine. In the end we shared! Washed down with a fabulous hot chocolate, we rolled each other back to the car to continue our journey north.
In a nutshell: A great stop off on State Highway Two, highly recommended.
