Surf’s Up

Squid Row Gastro Bar

224 Symonds Street

Surf’s up at Squid Row.

Set in the former Auckland Post Office, every wall and surface is lined with framed, old-school, black and white surfing photos. There is even a big screen playing retro surfing videos in true Beach Boys style. “Surfing is the only life, the only life for me.”

With high ceilings and mainly wooden décor, Squid Row has a carefree, relaxed atmosphere, making it the perfect spot for drinks or casual dining.

We started our dining experience with thick crusty garlic bread, oozing with flavour.

There was a huge selection of seafood dishes available on the menu, with many mussel specialities on offer. The husband chose the Salmon fillet on garlic mash for his main ($31). The salmon was perfectly cooked, although he questioned the match with the garlic.

I thoroughly enjoyed my Mushroom risotto ($24). Served with rocket and truffle oil, and a sprinkling of parmesan cheese it proved to be a substantial main, and very tasty.

The service was attentive, but not intrusive. We will definitely be back to try their $8 Cocktail hour, everyday from 5-9pm.

Squid Row is included in the Auckland Entertainment Book. Pay and display parking located on the corner of Mt Eden Road and Symonds Street.

In a nutshell: Tasty food and great atmosphere. We’ll be back.
