The Secret Garden
17 Wilson Road, Waihi Beach
I’ve discovered an unexpected tropical paradise at Waihi Beach, smack-bang in the middle of the Wilson Road Shops. Who would have thought?
Lurking behind an Indonesian craft shop are two unassuming wooden doors, just minding their own business. Step through the wooden doors and you’re transported into a Balinese Oasis, that is ‘The Secret Garden‘.
Set outside with high fences and tropical plants, the garden features wooden huts where you can lounge about on brightly coloured cushions, colourful bean bags set upon the grass, plus a variety of table and chair combos, surrounded by sculptures, Indonesian art and water sculptures. It’s beautiful.
We had two English friends in tow, so we enjoyed scones with jam and cream (how sophisticated) and a very tasty custard slice. I also appreciated the pineapple lump that accompanied my tasty hot chocolate, while the others sipped their coffee and juices.
I could imagine curling up with my organic coffee and a book and relaxing the afternoon away. I also noticed a basket of good ‘ole fashioned board games at the cafe counter.
Unless a local told you, or you read this blog, you’d never even know the secret garden existed, and I think the locals want to keep it that way. So, don’t tell anyone – it’s a secret.
In a nutshell: A very relaxing way to spend a sunny afternoon
